TIBET TOURS |
Tashi delek! Tibet, home to the indigenous
Tibetan people and its related ethnic groups, is the highest region on Earth and
has in recent decades increasingly been referred to as the "Roof of the World".
With an average elevation of 4,900 metres (16,000 ft), it has some of the
world's tallest mountains, including the highst mountain of the world: the Mount
Everest, at 8,848 metres (29,029 ft).
Several major rivers have
their source in the Tibetan Plateau (mostly in present-day Qinghai Province).
These include the Yangtze River, The Yellow River, The Indus River, The Mekong,
The Ganges and the the Yarlung Zangbo River (Brahmaputra River) The Indus and the Yarlung Zangbo rivers
originate from a lake (Tib: Tso Mapham) in Western Tibet, near Mount Kailash.
The mountain is a holy pilgrimage for both Hindus and Tibetans. The Tibetan name
for Mt. Kailash is Khang Rinpoche. Tibet has numerous high-altitude lakes
referred to in Tibetan as tso. These include Qinghai Lake, Lake
Manasarovar, Namtso, Pangong Tso, Yamdrok Lake,Lhamo La-tso, The Qinghai Lake
(Koko Nor) is the largest lake in the People's Republic of China.
The Tibetan economy is dominated by agriculture. Due to limited
arable land, livestock raising is the primary occupation on the Tibetan Plateau.
Among them are sheep, cattle, goats, camels, yaks, dzo (mix between a cow and a
yak) and horses. The main crops that are grown are barley, wheat, buckwheat,
rye, potatoes and assorted fruits and vegetables.
In recent years, due to
the increased interest in Tibetan Buddhism, tourism has become an increasingly
important sector. The growth of tourism world wide has paved way to the rise of establishments
that are in the mould of bournemouth hotels that provide good accommodation at
affordable rates.
